![]() Welcome Friends and family to our Rabbit
site
Sorry
this is not a pet rabbit site. We are a working farm just
to let you know before you go any further.
Miranda has been raising New Zealand white rabbits for
about 4 years now. She loves rabbits she even collects stuffed fake
rabbits which she gets a new one every Easter. Her rabbits are her
job she keeps the cages clean, she feeds and makes sure they have water.
She even breeds them.
Miranda raises the female and males from
babys and keeps these as pets. The babys coming from these she
sales for meat. This dosent seem to bother her since she knows this is
where she will be getting her money at and knows not to get attached to
the young ones.
Her father "Processes them" for
her for her customers and he provides the feed in return she sales some to
her dad at half price for our own meat usage. This was done at our last
ranch now we have to get the process center ready at our current all over again
and get the permits again. We are hoping to get into selling them to the 4-H
business. Randy has even sold them to a snake breeder before. She also
sales the Rabbit droppings to local neighbors for their garden. Rabbit
droppings can be one of the best things for your garden. We use a lot of
it for our own garden. This has been a great learning experience for
Miranda
Our hints for raising rabbits:
There are tons of care books out there for rabbits
that you can get to find out the basic care for them here are some of
our hints
1. Summer months can be hot here in South Texas so
we fill up water in plastic used juice bottles with screw on
caps-Take the paper off of them or the rabbits will-then place in
freezer in the morning we give each one bottle which they love laying
against for the coolness at night we put them back in freezer.
2. During the cold months which are few here in South
Texas we give them warm water for their buckets to help keep them
warm.
3. We wear gloves for the New Zealands cause they have
some mighty big feet better to be protected.
4. Check their ears for mites often. They tend to get them
every once in a while.
5. When you mow your grass dont forget about giving some
of that nice grass clippings to your rabbit. We have a section where we
mow each time they need some fresh grass. They love it!
6. Give them something to chew on. A nice thick stick is a
great chew toy for them otherwise other things get chewed up.
Rabbit profits:
Sell rabbits as pets to people or pet shops
Sell rabbits for meat (check your
state for meat laws)
Sell rabbits to 4-H students then buy them back, then
sell for meat or breed them.
A breed like Angora can actually be used for wool but make
sure you have a buyer before you buy these.
Sell the manure to your neighbor, nurserys.
Do you know of anyone that would like to buy the pelts for
the rabbits?
